Tips for Working Out at Home

Working out at home is a great alternative to the gym. Especially when you’re too busy to go to the gym. Or too tired. Or too ‘not in the mood to wash your hair before and after’ the gym. But how can you make the most of your at home session? Here are some ideas that can help you get started.

Fitness Only Space

First things first, create a dedicated fitness space in your home. Maybe for you it’s in your basement, or a spare bedroom, the garage, or a corner in your kid’s playroom. Wherever it may be, this is where you’ll store everything you need for your workouts including free weights, resistance bands, yoga mat, etc. When you’re in this space, you’re in the zone and ready to focus on the goal at hand.

Upcoming Appointment – Workout

Make your at home workout a priority! The easiest way to do this, is to actually schedule your workouts and put them in your calendar. You can’t forget a session or miss one accidentally if your alarm reminds you about it 10 minutes before it’s supposed to start. Try to schedule 3 or 4 workouts a week, for about 30 minutes to 1 hour at a time. Pro tip – schedule your workout for first thing in the morning as you’re less likely to find an excuse not to do it.

Workout Buddy

Find someone who can keep you on track and at the (home) gym. Be it your partner, best friend or family member, as long as they hold you accountable to your workout goals – and stop you from making excuses not to work out – then they’re your new workout bff. If no one comes to mind for the role, checkout fitness apps or Facebook groups that do this.

Dress the Part

One drawback to working out at home? It’s easy to stay in your pjs or sweats all day and binge watch the latest show instead of working out. An easy way to counter this urge is to change into your workout clothes! You’re more likely to actually stick to your scheduled workout this way.

Mute Everything Else!

Being at home means not being able to get away from distractions. These distractions can include your partner, child(ren), pets, your phone, emails, chores, errands, etc. Consider putting your phone on silent so you can focus on your workout and not the latest drama in your group chat. Also try letting your family know that you’ll be working out now and not to disturb you.

Don’t Forget to Warm Up and Cool Down

Just because you’re not at the gym doesn’t mean you should be taking short cuts! Don’t forget to do your warm up and cool down exercises (including stretches) as usual! They’re super important, even when working out at home, and help your body prepare for and recover from exercising.

Stay Hydrated

Fill your water bottle up pre workout and use it! Staying hydrated is always important, especially when being active.
